We talked a bit about Parcel Papers in our Antwerp is Calling blog, so we thought it would be helpful to explain!
A parcel paper — sometimes called a “brifka” — is a specialized folded paper envelope used by diamond dealers to store, protect, transport, and present diamonds. Brifka is a Yiddish-derived work that means "little letter" - very appropriately named, I'd say. And, it's not new - diamond and gemstones have been transported this way for thousands of years!
Typically designed with multiple stiff layers in white or blue-and-white, parcel papers help prevent scratching while allowing professionals to clearly view a stone’s brilliance under reflected light. Dealers often record important details such as carat weight, specifications, and pricing directly on the outside.
In many of our Antwerp selections, the original parcel paper travels with the diamond from the moment it leaves the earth, through cutting and polishing, and ultimately to us — creating a traceable record of its journey. Here is an example of a diamond's "birth papers"... it's parcel paper that traces its journey from the earth to our store.
